Your Role: Hands-On, Impactful, and Fast-Paced

As a CEI Roadway Inspector in Columbia, South Carolina, you will play a key role in overseeing, coordinating, and evaluating transportation infrastructure projects-including highways, bridges, rail systems, walkways, ports, and airports. Your primary responsibility will be to verify that contractors comply with all contractual obligations, blueprints, and technical specifications. The position includes a mix of office and fieldwork, often in diverse weather and environmental conditions. Adaptability is important, as the role may demand long hours and occasional work on weekends or holidays.


What You'll Do:

  • Supervise contractor operations such as earthwork, asphalt placement, bridge construction, and traffic control, ensuring all work meets design requirements and permitting conditions.
  • Keep detailed records-such as daily diaries, material documentation, and field notes-to facilitate contractor compensation and monitor project progress.
  • Take material samples, verify alignment and elevation using surveying equipment, and perform critical calculations to maintain construction precision.
  • Conduct reviews for DBE and EEO compliance and verify that environmental and permit-related erosion control standards are properly implemented.
  • Attend coordination meetings, work closely with external construction personnel, and report project status and findings to senior engineering staff.

Pay rate is based on the level of experience. Additional incentives are available for existing applicable certifications.


What We're Looking For:

  • High school diploma/GED
  • 2 or more years of highway-related construction or inspection experience or a 2-year technical degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Surveying Technology or higher with 2+ years of highway-related construction or experience
  • Ability to supervise crew and/or a separate program function of moderate complexity
  • One or more SCDOT-based certifications
  • Experience with SCDOT resurfacing projects including pavement markings, a plus
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) Certification, or other materials certifications, a plus

What to Expect

With the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Outdoor, hands-on work in all weather conditions
  • Walking over rough terrain and standing for long periods (up to 12 hours)
  • Lifting and carrying 40-50 lbs. of materials and equipment
  • Safely handling field tools and maneuvering equipment on active construction sites
