Position Summary

 

Shelby Eastern Community Schools is seeking a Civil Construction Instructor for the 2026–2027 school year. This position provides students with hands-on and classroom instruction designed to prepare them for careers in the civil construction and infrastructure industry. The ideal candidate will bring real-world experience from the civil construction field and a passion for mentoring students interested in construction careers.

The selected instructor will receive professional training and curriculum support through Work IN Roads, which helps industry professionals transition into the classroom while aligning instruction with workforce needs.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Deliver classroom and hands-on instruction in civil construction fundamentals.
  • Teach industry-relevant topics including:
    • Facilitate ATSSA Flagger certification
    • Construction math
    • Construction print/blueprint reading
    • Basic surveying principles and techniques
    • Jobsite awareness and operations
    • OSHA 10 safety training
    • Compact Track Loader (CTL) operations
    • Mini Excavator operations
    • Rigging
    • Crane safety
    • Etc.
  • Maintain a safe learning environment and reinforce jobsite safety practices.
  • Prepare students for entry-level employment, apprenticeships, or continued education in construction and infrastructure fields.
  • Integrate real-world construction practices and industry standards into instruction.
  • Monitor student progress and maintain required school documentation.
  • Participate in professional development and training opportunities.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Experience working in the civil construction or heavy highway construction industry.
  • Ability to work with and mentor high school students.
  • Willingness to complete required educator licensing or certification if not currently licensed.
  • Attend professional development opportunities.
  • Assist students in work based-learning placement.
  • Assist students in career planning and placement.

Preferred:

  • Experience operating construction equipment such as Compact Track Loaders (CTLs) and/or mini excavators.
  • OSHA safety certification (OSHA 10 or OSHA 30).
  • Previous teaching, coaching, or workforce training experience.

Professional Development

Shelby Eastern Community Schools will support the instructor through Work IN Roads professional training, which provides industry-aligned curriculum, instructor development, and support for teaching civil construction pathways.
