Position Overview

The Commercial Sales Representative is responsible for driving pricing growth, exceptional customer service, and market expansion through the sales of crushed limestone, sand, gravel, ready mix, and asphalt. This high‑visibility, field‑based role requires consistent face‑to‑face customer engagement, proactive prospecting, and disciplined account management.

In addition to core sales responsibilities, this position supports Ready Mix Quality Control (QC) and dispatch operations. The representative will work closely with dispatch to help coordinate deliveries, communicate customer needs, and ensure accurate scheduling of trucks and materials. This includes assisting with delivery logistics when needed and using a valid CDL to support aggregate and ready mix deliveries during peak demand or operational gaps.

The ideal candidate is a self‑motivated, growth‑oriented professional who enjoys solving problems and thrives in a fast‑paced environment. Daily logging of all sales activity, market intelligence, QC observations, dispatch insights, and macroeconomic data in Salesforce is required to ensure transparency, collaboration, and accurate planning.

This role collaborates closely with production, QC, dispatch, sales, and marketing. Success requires exceptional time management, the ability to plan and execute daily objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Sales & Market Development

  • Actively pursue sales of aggregates, ready mix, and hot‑mix asphalt (HMA) to private contractors, municipalities, commercial businesses, and other key accounts.
  • Conduct frequent in‑person customer visits to build relationships, understand needs, and increase wallet share.
  • Send quotes for aggregates, HMA, and ready mix through Salesforce, ensuring customers have a single point of contact for all material pricing.
  • Document all customer visits in Salesforce, including goals, outcomes, market intelligence, and Next Best Alternatives (NBAs).
  • Log daily sales activities, competitor actions, QC observations, dispatch insights, and local economic conditions.
  • Execute pricing strategies and market development plans as directed by the Director of Sales.
  • Prioritize daily objectives to maximize high‑impact sales activities.
  • Develop and maintain lists of prospective customers and market leads.
  • Provide regular updates on market trends, customer needs, backlog status, and sales forecasts.
  • Attend local industry meetings and events to build relationships and create new business opportunities.
  • Identify opportunities for construction services during customer visits and report them to estimators.
  • Review Tableau external sales reports to assess performance and understand where the company is winning or losing market share.

Account Management & Customer Support

  • Monitor customer accounts to ensure prompt payment and accurate account status.
  • Respond quickly and professionally to customer requests, RFQs, project updates, and delivery needs.
  • Coordinate product delivery when needed to maintain customer satisfaction.
  • Track inventory availability and work with operations to meet customer demand.
  • Attend sales meetings and contribute customer insights, market feedback, and performance updates.

Ready Mix Quality Control (QC) Support

  • Conduct field QC tests, including slump tests and concrete cylinder sampling (target: 2–3 tests per week; most formal tests completed by consultants).
  • Communicate customer feedback regarding product performance to QC and operations teams.
  • Understand basic mix design requirements and ensure products meet project specifications.
  • Identify potential quality concerns in the field and escalate to QC personnel promptly.
  • Support QC during trial batches, performance evaluations, and project startups.
  • Reinforce QC best practices with customers to protect product quality and company reputation.

Dispatch & Logistics Support

  • Assist dispatch with coordinating daily ready mix and aggregate delivery schedules.
  • Communicate jobsite conditions, delivery requirements, and timeline changes in real time.
  • Help troubleshoot delivery issues such as conflicts, delays, or equipment constraints.
  • Provide call‑volume and scheduling support during high‑traffic periods.
  • Serve as backup dispatch when dispatch personnel are on vacation or required to drive, enabling other staff to focus on core responsibilities.

Driver Support

  • Use CDL credentials to fill in as a driver when needed to ensure continuity of service and timely product delivery.

Other Responsibilities

  • Maintain strict compliance with all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Assist with special projects and additional duties as assigned.

Role Expectations

  • Attend weekly sales meetings with leadership to review performance and priorities.
  • Conduct 2–3 QC tests per week, as opportunities allow.
  • Send complete, accurate quotes covering aggregates, HMA, and ready mix to streamline customer experience.
  • Review Tableau sales reports regularly to monitor wins, losses, and competitive movement.
  • Meet weekly with top customers to maintain relationships and capture market needs.
  • Visit and engage at least three dormant customers per week (target may adjust based on market size).
  • Serve as a fill‑in driver when operational needs require.
  • Visit at least two cities or towns per week to identify upcoming construction needs and communicate opportunities to estimators.
  • Review public meeting agendas and minutes for project intel and early bid opportunities.
  • Provide backup dispatch support during vacations or when dispatch personnel are driving.
  • Support safety operations by acting as a spotter on jobsites or performing hazard assessments before projects begin.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in construction materials sales (crushed stone, sand, gravel, concrete, or asphalt preferred).
  • Demonstrated success in face‑to‑face selling and territory development.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills with the ability to independently plan and prioritize.
  • Proficiency with CRM platforms, especially Salesforce, and Microsoft Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to work effectively in a cross‑functional team environment.
  • Willingness to travel overnight weekly throughout the territory.

Additional Requirements
