JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under general supervision of the Engineering Division and reporting to the Engineering Coordinator, this position provides support and assistance by performing a wide range of engineering and construction related tasks, including waterlines, storm water/sanitary sewer, roadway, sidewalks, and drainage.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  For purposes of 42 USC 12101:

  1. Provides onsite construction inspection on capital improvement projects and infrastructure maintenance projects as assigned; applies standard engineering principles; prepares material estimates; assists with public meetings; records daily events noting progress, work items completed, and any discrepancies; assists in design and construction progress meetings, reviews pay applications; prepares change orders; serves as liaison between public and contractor; responds to public questions and concerns).
  2. Responsible for ensuring that all construction activities comply with contract requirements and work is performed in accordance with good construction practices; verifying that materials and equipment incorporated into the project meet contract requirements; monitoring contract labor requirements; providing adequate and accurate reports; ensuring that applicable construction safety standards are met; verifying that approved Contractor submittals are available before work is performed; verifying that actual construction progress agrees with approved progress schedules.
  3. Investigates resident requests for service (e.g., performs technical research; drafts written responses and provides telephone responses concerning infrastructure, traffic, drainage, and other engineering-related issues).
  4. Performs inspections and rating of City streets, street lights, structures, guardrail installation, and curbs; reviews drainage calculations, erosion control, grading plans, and water and sanitary capacity.
  5. Provides surveying, design, drafting, and cost estimates for in-house engineering projects related to all construction and water, storm water and sanitary sewer; maintains, updates, and issues street opening permits/stormwater management permits.
  6. Maintains licenses and certifications as required, if any.
  7. Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
  8. Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Typical Qualifications

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Valid State of Ohio Driver's License and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy.

INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:  
The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); is exposed to possible injury from unclean or unsanitary conditions; works with moving mechanical parts of equipment of machines; is exposed to extreme weather conditions; is exposed to hazardous driving conditions; is exposed to dangerous fumes; ascends scaffolds/ladders; works in or around crowds; occasionally lifts, pushes, pulls, or carries objects 50 lbs. or less.
 
Note:  In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this is considered medium work.
