Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing inspectional work and enforcing compliance for new construction, remodeling, alterations, repairs, moving, or demolition of structures to ensure compliance with the City adopted building codes, zoning ordinances, and other related City ordinances. Exercises no supervision.

Essential Job Functions

  • Conducts inspections of civil construction work projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Inspection work is performed on major streets, drainage systems, sewers, bridge construction and related activities in subdivisions. Inspections must comply with adopted Public Works Standards. 
  • Discuss repairs, alterations, and new construction with owners and contractors; explains and interprets building codes and regulations.
  • Issues verbal or written orders for correction of defects in materials, workmanship, and other violations of codes and ordinances.
  • Documents inspection results and investigations in laptop or desktop computer using land development software.
  • Responds to questions by phone pertaining to building related codes, zoning, and the Unified Development Code. 
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • Four (4) years of public works projects experience.
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications 
  • Experience surveying.
  • Experience with street and drainage construction.
  • Experience and/or ability to read construction plans.
  • Experience working with a calculator and computer; experience interpreting various measurements and calculations.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months.  One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associated software programs.
  • Ability to learn City Ordinances relating to zoning and building construction.
  • Ability to properly interpret and apply all applicable related codes.
  • Ability to read blue prints and specifications.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
  • Ability to learn the Unified Development Code of the City of San Antonio.
