Position Overview - Distribution Designer


We are seeking a Distribution Designer to support local utility projects by designing and developing electrical distribution systems. This role involves working closely with customers, contractors, and government agencies to ensure efficient project execution while adhering to regulatory and safety standards.


The Distribution Designer will be responsible for meeting with customers to assess project feasibility, creating and processing work requests, estimating electrical loads, and drafting construction prints using CAD software. Additionally, they will coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders to address project changes, troubleshoot voltage complaints, and ensure the constructability of designs in the field.

This position requires relevant utility experience in design or construction, proficiency in CAD drafting, and the ability to work both in-office and in the field. Travel to project sites may be required.

Duties:Β 
  • Meet with customers and/or their agents to discuss needs and feasibility on new
  • construction projects and load additions, and to determine the schedule and
  • required completion dates of different construction phases.
  • Communicate to all involved entities concerning any updates in the construction
  • schedule or other changes with potential impact, documenting updates through
  • letters and e-mails, as necessary.
  • Create and/or process work requests in a company specific Project Management System.
  • Estimate the electrical loads for customers and determine actual or propose field measurements (such as span distances, conductor height/sizes, etc.).
  • Model these conditions in the appropriate software applications to determine optimal equipment/material specifications to meet customer needs while ensuring all results are following respective regulatory requirements.
  • Use company specific software to draw the proposed and existing electrical features.
  • Produce and/or oversee the production of construction prints and right-of-way permit drawings for Field Construction, Operations and/or contractors:
  • Verify that locations of existing and proposed equipment and any third parties' infrastructures (water, sewer, storm, gas, telephone, and cable lines) are adequately identified on the construction prints, and equipment specifications are captured.
  • Based on the scope of construction and company safety standards; determine necessity and scale of the Maintenance-of-Traffic (MOT) plan that Field Construction, Operations, and/or contractors would need for completing work in the right-of-way.
  • Troubleshoot customer voltage complaints and utilize engineering skills to resolve customer voltage complaint.
  • Meet with DOT, county, municipalities, other utilities and contractors to preplan the construction and modification of roads and distribution systems.
  • Provide engineering and project management for Large Master-planned, multiple parcel residential developments; and Commercial projects that may include malls, large retail, and schools.Β 
  • Interpret plans for large government projects of relative complexity, such as road widening, intersection improvements, and the installations or relocations of public infrastructures.
  • Analyze road construction design prints and identify/indicate any physical and economic impacts to utility facilities
  • Mentor less experienced Designers.Β 
  • Continuously monitor emails, inner office chats, and company communications during working hours
  • Travel to project area to verify design constructability and gather data on the area and existing facilities.
  • Evening and weekend work may be required based on company and client needs

Qualifications:
  • Relevant working experience may substitute for time qualification
  • CAD drafting or GIS experience
  • Clear MVR in order to operate a company vehicle
  • Two years of distribution design experience is preferredΒ 
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift to 25 pounds at a time
  • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions
