Equipment Operator

The Equipment Operator is a part of the Road and Bridge team. This team is responsible for construction and maintenance of roads and bridges in the county that are not part of the state highway system or with a municipality. The Equipment Operator performs specialized skilled work in the operation of one or more types of motorized heavy equipment used in the maintenance and construction of roads and bridges.

• Operates heavy equipment and machinery by using front-end loader, motor-grader, back hoe, brush cutter, tractor w/shredder, chipper, distributor truck.   Removes brush and weeds from roadsides.   Repairs pot holes and other road construction 
• Operates pick-ups and dump trucks in hauling dirt, gravel, sand, rock and pea gravel
• Verifies equipment and materials are in place for road surfacing
• Performs equipment inspections to ensure proper function; washes equipment as necessary
• Performs routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment
• Works with road maintenance crews as assigned by Foreman 
• Works with general contractors with the assistance of county employees in the repairing and inspecting of bridges along with performing general tasks such as shoveling, carrying lumber, and nailing for bridge repair
• Organizes, installs, monitors, and repairs County road signs as needed
• Performs all work in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, County and department policies and procedures, and standards of quality and safety
• Performs traffic control such as flagging, setting barricades and cones, hauling equipment and is on-call for flood control during storms
• Regular attendance and timeliness are required

EDUCATION:
Required:  

• High School Diploma or GED

• 1-year work experience in operating road construction equipment (i.e. motor grader, backhoe, track loader, etc.) 
• Current and valid Texas CDL-Class A license and a good driving record
• Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with the operation and maintenance of heavy-duty construction equipment 
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees and general public
• Excellent organizational and time management skills, especially the ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks
• Must be a self-starter and able to accomplish expected tasks under minimal supervision
• Ability to perform skilled manual work; and to demonstrate sufficient strength, agility and dexterity in performing the duties of the position

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Works mostly outdoors. Exposed to extreme heat, cold, rain, humidity, wetness, hazardous chemicals, insects, dust, poisonous plants, unpleasant smells, fumes, traffic hazards, and physical stress from exertion. Some incumbents may have contact with buried electric, phone, or television cable lines. This position follows DOT guidelines.
 
PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:

• While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to stoop, bend, push and pull. May have to lift heavy boxes or objects up to 100 pounds. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Exposure to extreme heat and cold.
• Ability to see and hear hazards associated with the operation of construction equipment.
• Stand for long periods of time.
• Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls. Repetitive movements.

McLennan County will conduct background checks on new hires that will include a criminal background check related to convictions and deferred adjudications in the past seven years and may include credit reports, motor vehicle records, employment records, and educational attainment.   A conviction or deferred adjudication is not an automatic bar to employment.  Each case is considered individually.
