Position Overview

The Fellow Engineer – Nuclear Safety serves as a recognized technical authority responsible for resolving highly complex nuclear safety and safety basis challenges. This role provides leadership in developing, reviewing, and implementing nuclear safety documentation and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and DOE directives. The position functions as a subject matter expert and technical leader supporting mission-critical nuclear operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply advanced technical expertise in nuclear safety and safety basis work to resolve complex technical problems.

  • Incorporate advanced technical practices, specialized processes, complex technical requirements, and difficult coordination into program planning and problem solving.

  • Provide leadership in determining solutions to complex problems and be recognized as having expertise in a functional area of technical expertise.

  • Lead task teams developing solutions to major technical challenges, including schedules, budgets, and personnel requirements.

  • Develop schedules, monitor progress, monitor expenditures, and review quality of work performed, including research, development, testing, and quality assurance requirements.

  • Communicate results and objectives verbally and in written form to customers, colleagues, managers, and oversight groups.

  • Prepare reports for external publication.

  • Support the development, review, and implementation of nuclear safety documentation for various facilities.

  • Provide technical assistance in developing and reviewing nuclear safety documents and analyses, technical safety requirements, and related technical support documentation.

  • Ensure nuclear safety documentation complies with requirements and that applicable controls are implemented in field procedures.

  • Conduct Nuclear Safety Program assessments and maintain program manuals.

Work Hours

Up to a 40-hour work week is scheduled. Work schedules may include 5/8s, 4/10s, or 9/80s. Work week excludes client holidays. Each workday includes a 30-minute lunch. Overtime may be required at times to meet deliverables at the discretion of management.


Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • PhD with approximately 10 years of experience, OR

  • MS with approximately 12 years of experience, OR

  • BS with approximately 15 years of experience

Experience/Skills

  • Considered an internal expert in area of expertise.

  • Contributes to advancing knowledge in field of expertise through avenues such as publications and professional society presentations.

  • Ability to solve complex problems in field of expertise.

Regulatory/Standards Experience (Required)

  • Previous experience with the use and implementation of 10 CFR 830, DOE O 413.3, DOE O 420.1, DOE Standards 3009, 1186, 1189, and related directives and standards.

  • Proficiency in developing and providing safety basis inputs to facility and project schedules while meeting deadlines and budgets.

  • Ability to perform work safely and proficiency in performing Nuclear Safety Program assessments.

Area Security Access

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates who have possessed an active DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past two (2) years.

  • Fifteen years of relevant experience in developing, reviewing, and maintaining safety basis documents and safety basis support documents.

  • Demonstrated previous SRS nuclear safety engineering experience.

Additional Work Requirements

  • Clearance “Q” required.

  • Travel cannot occur until approved by procurement via a fully funded requisition and added to the Task Order Authorization. Travel justification, locations, estimated costs, and dates must be provided prior to approval. Travel to conferences or trainings will not be reimbursed. All rates are fully burdened and should include all costs outside of direct business travel.
