POSITION PURPOSE:

The Lead Operator for the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project safely operates heavy equipment and trucks excavating, placing, receiving, loading, and transporting low-level radioactive waste tailings at the Crescent Junction site. Lead operator works under the direction of a supervisor and/or site manager to support heavy equipment operations and tasks. Equipment may include front end loader, water wagon, compactor, back-hoe, excavator, dozer, 40-ton articulated dump trucks, reach stacker, water trucks, service trucks, etc.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Supervise smaller work crews and provide direction to crew to complete assigned tasks.
  • Performing all duties in accordance with project policies and procedures, and complying with all federal, state, and local regulations for secure and safe operation. Enforces all safety policies and procedures.
  • Good time management skills to ensure assigned responsibilities are completed in an efficient and safe manner.
  • Trains or assists in training new equipment operators.
  • Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality.
  • Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency.
  • Conducting a thorough inspection of the equipment assigned.
  • Assists inspection of all equipment used during shift and follows through on repairs and services identified during inspections.
  • Continuously monitors the condition of the equipment to ensure it is operationally ready at all times to minimize downtime.
  • Safely operating equipment in different configurations as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:


  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ten (10) or more years of experience operating and driving construction-related equipment.

Skills and Abilities:


  • Extensive knowledge of operational characteristics for project equipment and common maintenance requirements.
  • Possess the ability to plan and execute tasks after receiving written or oral instructions.
  • Builds and motivates teams to complete tasks safely and efficiently. Mentor workers to become better and more effective operators in assigned and new equipment.
  • Must have knowledge of and comply with all regulations and procedures governing safe driving, and inspection and maintenance of equipment.
  • Ability to communicate professionally, both orally and in written form, and to maintain records related to the job.
  • Ability to work in different types of personal protective equipment (half-face, full-face respirators, Tyvek, etc.) while performing various tasks/activities (e.g., climbing, walking, stopping, etc.) in different work environments (e.g., cold, heat, etc.).

Special Requirements:


  • Must pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug testing.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to pass U.S. Government employment background check and acquire a U.S. Government Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential card.
  • Ability to qualify as a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Radiation Worker II and complete Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) worker qualification and pass a HAZWOPER/respirator user medical exam.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including overtime, weekends, and night shifts, pending demand.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Experience on UMTRA-type projects is highly desirable.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will stand/walk for long periods in an outside environment, but will also be required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is often required to use hands or fingers to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Outdoor work environment with exposure to all weather conditions and temperature extremes.
