Shimmick is seeking a highly talented Mechanical Superintendent based out of Chattanooga, TNThis challenging position will provide an excellent growth opportunity while improving the infrastructure of the city.

National Division

Shimmick’s National Division operates throughout the central and eastern United States and focuses on water resources including locks, dams, levees and flood control, many along the nation’s coasts and inland waterways. Comprised of legacy companies Morrison Knudsen, Washington Group International, and others, Shimmick’s National Division has decades-long history of delivering projects for repeat clients like New Jersey Transit, where Shimmick has been operating and maintaining the Hudson-Bergen Rail Line for more than 20 years.

The National Division has also delivered numerous projects for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, primarily in the water resources sector along the nation’s inland waterways and coastlines. One such project was the new Olmsted Dam on the Ohio River, where according to USACE, more commerce traverses than any other location on the entire U.S. inland waterways. With the Olmsted lock and dam replacement, economic net benefits to the nation are estimated to be more than $640 million annually.

Responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Superintendent to oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of mechanical work on large-scale infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of mechanical systems such as pumps, piping, HVAC, and process equipment typically used in water treatment facilities, power plants, or other heavy civil environments.

 

Typical responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervise and coordinate daily millwright activities, including mechanical installations, equipment setting, shaft and coupling alignments, and welding operations.
  • Ensure all work is executed in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Oversee the installation, fitment, and adjustment of rotating and stationary equipment, including pumps, motors, gearboxes, conveyors, and associated systems.
  • Lead and mentor millwright crews and subcontractors to maintain productivity, safety, and quality expectations.
  • Plan and schedule work activities in coordination with project management, ensuring critical path milestones are met.
  • Maintain daily logs, monitor progress, and proactively address field issues to prevent delays.
  • Coordinate inspections and quality control checks related to welding and mechanical fit-up.
  • Enforce strict adherence to Shimmick’s safety protocols, with a strong commitment to a zero-incident culture.
  • Interface with engineering, procurement, and clients as needed to resolve technical issues and ensure proper execution of work.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED + 10 years of relevant mechanical construction experience, with at least 6 years in a superintendent or field leadership role

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 15 years of mechanical construction experience is preferred
  • Experience in heavy civil construction projects
  • Concrete structures, MSE Walls, Rail, Transit, Wastewater
  • Current OSHA 10
  • Must be detail oriented, thorough, well organized and effectively manage time
  • Ability to work in a high-paced environment with a sense of urgency
  • Strong organizational skills – ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Demonstrated expertise in millwright work, including welding, mechanical alignment (laser and dial indicator), and equipment fit-up.
  • Familiarity with construction drawings, specifications, and QA/QC practices.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple disciplines on-site.
  • OSHA 30-hour certification preferred.
  • NCCER or AWS certification a plus.
  • Experience on water infrastructure, hydroelectric, or similar mechanical-heavy projects.
  • Working knowledge of rigging, hoisting, and heavy equipment installation.
  • Experience with scheduling tools (Primavera P6, MS Project) is a plus.

The salary range for this position is between $135,200 - $145,600 per year depending on experience and/or education.
