The duties include constructing and maintaining county roads by performing manual labor and/or operating equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, dozers, backhoes, pneumatic and steel drum rollers, street sweepers, asphalt/concrete saws, bucket/aerial lift trucks, crack sealing machine, asphalt zipper, end dump trailers, belly dump trailers (trains), snow plows and sander trucks. In addition to operating equipment, the person performs other daily duties, which includes crack sealing, patching pot holes, building and repairing bridges, erecting signs and fences; and other related duties. The county is not looking simply for truck drivers; we are looking for individuals willing to carry out the listed duties... who can also drive trucks. As a county employee at the Road Department, you would receive the following benefits:

  • 100% employer-paid Nevada PERS retirement (in addition to your hourly pay, the county contributes 33.5% to PERS) - value of $8.45/hour ($17,500 annually),
  • No social security contribution. PERS replaces social security, therefore you will take home an additional 6% because you do not need to pay a contribution - value of $1.51 an hour ($3,100 annually).
  • 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employee-only coverage. (Employee must pay 100% for any dependent coverage.) - Value of $5.82 an hour ($12,115 annually).
  • Work four ten-hour days (get three days off per week).

This position is subject to DOT Drug and Alcohol testing regulations. The person selected must successfully pass a thorough background check as well as pre-employment drug testing. (While the job description indicates a Class A CDL is required, applicants who do not possess a current CDL will be considered and, if selected, would be required to obtain a Class A CDL within 6 months of employment.)

An eligible list will be created for the position based upon position-related criteria. The list will be maintained for twelve months and may be used for openings for Road Maintenance/Construction Specialist only. Inclusion on the eligible list is not a guarantee of a current or future job offer.


Position Summary: Responsible for performing skilled work in the construction, repair and maintenance of the County's transportation infrastructure.


Distinguishing Characteristics
This classification performs skilled duties that require various specialized licenses and certifications, operates heavy equipment and complex construction equipment on a daily basis. Exact responsibilities will vary, depending upon the crew or project to which assigned; however, all assignments are characterized by heavy physical labor and equipment operation. This class is distinguished from Road Construction Equipment Operator in that the latter has the primary responsibility of working independently operating heavy construction equipment in remote geographical areas.

Essential Functions

This job description indicates, in general, the nature and levels of work, knowledge, skills, abilities and other essential functions (as covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act) expected of the incumbent.  It is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities required of the incumbent.  Incumbent may be asked to perform other duties as required.

  • Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Repairs and maintains paved and unpaved roadways to include crack sealing, pot hole patching, hot mix paving, chip seal paving, asphalt cutting/removal, shouldering and debris removal.
  • Builds, repairs and replaces structures to include wood, steel, and concrete bridges and culverts, guard rails and cattle guards.
  • Operates a variety of heavy and construction equipment and vehicles including dump trucks, loaders, dozers, backhoes, excavators, asphalt patch truck, pneumatic rollers, steel drum rollers, street sweepers, asphalt and concrete saws, trenchers, forklift, bucket/aerial lift trucks, crack sealing machine, asphalt zipper, paver screed, end dump trailers, belly dump trailers (trains), distributor truck, snow plows and sander trucks.
  • Forms, pours and finishes concrete to include curb/gutter, bridge decks, culvert and bridge extensions, walkways, cattle guards and driveway approaches.
  • Installs traffic control devices for work zones to include barricades and cones; performs flagging operations; ensures safety of workers and the public.
  • Trims and removes trees along roadways and right-of-ways; operates bucket/lift truck, industrial wood chipper and chain saws.
  • Performs field surveys based on plans/diagrams by setting stakes and checking elevations.
  • Hauls materials to job sites using a variety of trucks and trailers.
  • Performs minor adjustments and preventive maintenance and reports the need for major maintenance or repair.
  • Ensures that tools, equipment, safety devices and materials required for the job are loaded prior to moving to the job site.
  • Operates the County gravel plant and cone crusher as required.
  • Secures equipment upon completion of the work.
  • Maintains basic logs and records related to work performed.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
 
Education and Experience
High School Diploma/GED; AND three (3) years of experience in road and/or bridge construction and maintenance, including carpentry/concrete construction; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
 
Required Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of:

  • Methods and materials used in general building and above-ground and underground infrastructure maintenance and repair work.
  • Methods and practices of pavement maintenance and repair.
  • Operation and capability of various truck/trailer combinations and heavy construction equipment.
  • Techniques of cement construction, pouring and finishing.
  • Use and maintenance of hand and power tools related to the work.
  • Traffic laws and ordinances applicable to equipment operation.
  • Safety principles, practices and equipment related to the work.
  • Basic record keeping practices.
 Skill in:
  • Practicing safe work procedures and practices.
  • Performing construction and maintenance work, individually or as a member of a crew.
  • Operating a variety of construction equipment skillfully and safely.
  • Driving a variety of vehicles skillfully and safely.
  • Adjusting and performing preventive maintenance on the equipment to which assigned.

Required Certificates, Licenses and Registrations
  • Nevada Class A Driver's License with tanker, doubles and triples endorsements.
  • Forklift certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
  • OSHA 10 certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
  • MSHA Part 46 certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
  • Flagger and work zone safety certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
  • First Aid & CPR certification within six (6) months of date of employment.

Mobility to work in a typical maintenance setting, including operating typical construction equipment, hand and power tools and standard office equipment, and to drive a motor vehicle to various work sites; stamina to stand, walk and climb and to work in confined or awkward spaces for an extended period of time; strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds with proper equipment; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over a radio or telephone.
 
Work is subject to performance in work zones on or around city, state, and county roadways; performance in outside environments with exposure to vehicular traffic, inclement weather, extreme heat, fumes and airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and near or on heavy equipment; exposure to high noise levels; may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, exposure to working from heights, under risk of electrical shock and subject to vibration.
