Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Construction Accountant to oversee project accounting, financial reporting, job cost management, and compliance functions for a growing general contracting company. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records across multiple construction projects, supporting project managers and executives with financial analysis, and ensuring timely processing of pay applications, subcontractor payments, and project-related reporting.

The ideal candidate will possess strong construction accounting experience, a deep understanding of job costing and percentage-of-completion accounting, and the ability to manage multiple fast-paced projects simultaneously.

Key Responsibilities

Project & Job Cost Accounting

  • Maintain and monitor project budgets, cost codes, and job cost reports.
  • Review and track committed costs, change orders, subcontract agreements, and purchase orders.
  • Analyze project financial performance, forecast costs to complete, and identify budget variances.
  • Assist project managers with financial tracking and reporting throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Prepare and maintain Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion reporting.

Accounts Payable & Receivable

  • Review and process subcontractor and vendor invoices for accuracy and contract compliance.
  • Manage subcontractor pay applications, lien waivers, insurance compliance, and retention tracking.
  • Prepare owner billings and progress payment applications.
  • Monitor collections and assist with accounts receivable follow-up.

Financial Reporting

  • Prepare monthly financial statements, project cost reports, and management reporting packages.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts, bank accounts, and project-specific accounts.
  • Assist with year-end closing activities and coordination with external CPAs and auditors.
  • Ensure accurate allocation of labor, materials, equipment, and overhead costs.

Compliance & Administration

  • Maintain compliance with contract requirements, insurance documentation, and subcontractor agreements.
  • Support payroll processing, certified payroll reporting, and prevailing wage compliance when applicable.
  • Assist with sales tax reporting, contractor licensing requirements, and audit preparation.
  • Ensure compliance with internal accounting controls and company financial procedures.

Systems & Process Management

  • Maintain accounting and project management software systems.
  • Support implementation and improvement of accounting procedures and reporting processes.
  • Coordinate with project management teams to ensure accurate financial data entry and forecasting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5–10 years of accounting experience in the construction industry.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Construction job costing
    • WIP reporting
    • Percentage-of-completion accounting
    • AIA billing procedures
    • Retention tracking
    • Change order management
  • Experience with construction accounting software such as:
    • Procore
    • Viewpoint
    • QuickBooks Contractor Edition
    • Foundation
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA certification preferred but not required.
  • Experience in healthcare, commercial, or large-scale construction projects.
  • Familiarity with subcontract management, bonded projects, and lien law compliance.
  • Experience managing multi-state contractor accounting operations.

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to work in an office environment with occasional project site visits.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer.
  • Occasional overtime may be required to meet reporting deadlines.
