Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Scientist to join our multidisciplinary environmental services team. The ideal candidate will lead complex environmental investigations and provide expert interpretation of analytical data in support of a wide variety of environmental projects. This role requires strong technical expertise, effective project management skills, and the ability to mentor junior staff.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Minimum 8-12 years of professional experience, preferably within environmental consulting.
  • Proficiency in geological software (e.g., GIS, AutoCAD, RockWare, TabLogs) is a plus.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations (state and federal), s soil and rock mechanics, hydrogeology, and environmental site assessment.
  • Experience with environmental field investigation techniques (drilling, sampling, logging).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to lead projects and mentor staff.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced consulting environment.
  • Ability to interpret and utilize environmental data to make sound decisions that achieve project objectives.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple, concurrent projects.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Core Discipline Leadership

  • Provide expert interpretation of analytical data in support of environmental investigations and remediation projects.
  • Lead environmental investigations including site reconnaissance, drilling oversight, sampling, and field data collection.
  • Interpret and utilize environmental data to make decisions to reach project objectives.
  • Conduct environmental risk assessments related to impacted soil, groundwater, surface water, and soil vapor.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, maps, and presentations for clients, regulators, and internal teams.
  • Review and validate technical work products including reports, work plans, and sampling plans.
  • Serve as a technical leader in the areas of environmental assessment, remediation, hydrogeology, and environmental compliance.
  • Guide the selection and application of appropriate field methods, data evaluation techniques, and regulatory standards.
  • Apply advanced technical knowledge to develop and implement investigative strategies and remedial approaches.

Project Oversight, Operational & Strategic Leadership

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring technical quality, budget, and schedule compliance.
  • Oversee field operations and data collection activities to ensure adherence to work plans, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor and manage project budgets, schedules, and deliverable deadlines.
  • Stay current with evolving industry regulations, best practices, and technologies.
  • Contribute to strategic planning initiatives to expand BLE's environmental services.
  • Identify opportunities for technical innovation and operational improvements.
  • Assist in workload forecasting, resource planning, and operational decision-making within the environmental group.

Leadership, Management, and People Development

  • Serve as a lead professional and primary client contact on projects.
  • Oversee the work of junior staff and subcontractors in the field and office.
  • Coordinate project resources and schedules, reporting project status to internal leadership and clients.
  • Mentor and train junior technical staff, fostering professional growth and technical development.
  • Provide guidance and oversight on technical procedures, regulatory compliance, and project management best practices.
  • Support staff in obtaining professional certifications and licenses.

Client & Business Development Support

  • Develop and maintain client relationships through responsive communication, technical expertise, and quality service delivery.
  • Participate in business development efforts including proposal preparation, fee estimates, and client presentations.
  • Support client retention and growth through exemplary project performance.

Regulatory & Quality Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations on all projects.
  • Maintain and enforce quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) standards for technical deliverables.
  • Serve as a resource for regulatory interpretation and project permitting processes.
