Through its wholly owned insurance carrier, Upland Specialty Insurance Company, the company markets, underwrites and services specialty insurance products in select markets to include excess transportation, construction casualty, excess casualty, primary general liability, excess public entity, professional liability errors and omissions as well as excess cyber liability.

As an Excess and Surplus (E&S) carrier, we face unique and interesting challenges every day. We are seeking a Senior Business Development Analyst to join our amazing team.

Primary Function:

The role of Senior Business Development Analyst will support the growth of Upland’s underwriting business as an operational service expert and advocate for the ongoing and developing needs of our underwriting teams.

In this role, you will be expected to possess knowledge on existing business workflows as you will be an integral player in the development and prioritization of business initiatives. The Senior Business Development Analyst will act as a subject matter expert in their assigned lines of business and guide other Business Development Analysts and new team members in the operational procedures of the department.

The Senior Business Development Analyst will support the development of requirements for Upland’s policy forms and product enhancements, rater updates and other process enhancements.  In addition, the position will support established Underwriting teams and participate in the launch of new business units. This role will also act as the product owner and subject matter expert on assigned vendor products that enhance company operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for underwriting platforms, analyzing systems and workflows to identify process improvements and propose solutions that increase efficiency
  • Own cross business unit underwriting operations initiatives (e.g., Clearance, PLR, OMS workflows) from problem definition to measured outcomes; define baselines/targets and automate KPI reporting.
  • Hold delegated decision rights on scope changes within defined guardrails; sign off business readiness and release enhancements
  • Mentor team members in Business Development Analyst operations, sharing best practices and collaborating with Underwriting and Digital Delivery teams to ensure consistent processes and knowledge transfer
  • Act as a Product Owner of assigned vendor relation projects with Underwriting Operations and Digital Delivery displaying technical expertise in the platform
  • Act as subject matter expert on the assigned function product line of business (LOB) to ensure operational performance
  • Perform detailed analysis on underwriting specific projects, document and report on changes needed to meet efficiencies goals, recommend potential business solutions, and ensure successful outcomes to reach successful implementations
  • Assist with and support QA Team with user acceptance testing for any enhancements or implementations impacting the Underwriting teams
  • Support the established and proposed underwriting business processes through data analysis, identification of implementation barriers, and user acceptance testing of various systems
  • Create operational reports related to new business implementation processes
  • Coordinate with UW Operations colleagues to deliver training documentation for post project implementation
  • Develop, share and incorporate organizational best practices into business applications
  • Diagnose problems and identify opportunities for process redesign and improvement
  • Formulate and update departmental policies and procedures
  • Define requirements through interviews, workshops, surveys and existing system documentation or procedures
  • Act as a business partner to the underwriting business, actuarial and technology teams by conducting analysis of business needs against current trends in the market as well as predictive analysis trends and offering recommendations based on findings.  Partner with Digital Delivery to bring these findings to fruition
  • Act as a business partner with Digital Delivery to assist in the development of additional resources to streamline and enhance the Underwriting process
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Experience, Education, Special Skills Required:

Desired Skills / Education

  • Minimum of 5 of related experience in business analytics or operational analytics required
  • 1-3 years of insurance experience, preferred but not required
  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • Proven ability to create clear and detailed business requirements
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to learn business processes
  • Competency to learn new software tools
  • Ability to organize and interpret data
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments

Specific Skills/Knowledge:

  • JIRA and Confluence experience a plus
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on continuous improvement and the ability to manage multiple projects
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Strong verbal communication, presentation, facilitation and customer service skills
  • Ability to generate, collect, and review data; identify patterns and trends and prepare detailed analyses
  • Ability to work independently and reliably to meet deadlines and objectives with top-level professional results 
  •  Ability to communicate effectively with team members, provide status updates, and escalate critical issues cross-functionally in a remote environment 

Disclosures:

Pay Estimate: $ 80,000 - $90,000/year

Other compensation: annual incentive program
