Position Overview
Are you an ambitious and driven individual with a foundational understanding of environmental, civil, or geotechnical principles, eager to launch your career in a dynamic consulting environment? We are seeking a Engineering Staff Associate to join our growing team, contributing to diverse projects across environmental, civil, geotechnical, geostructural, and construction material testing disciplines. This role is ideal for individuals looking to develop their skills, gain hands-on experience, and progress towards professional licensure. You will be a vital part of our project teams, supporting senior staff and learning the ins and outs of engineering consulting from the ground up.
Our Regional Quality Assurance group focuses on serving projects for our solid waste, mining, and power industry clients. These projects span a multitude of quality assurance support roles, from geotechnical exploration in support of design development to quality assurance testing and documentation during construction, as well as some longer-term monitoring of containment systems, groundwater and gas monitoring support, stability analysis, and more.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Associate's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Science, Construction Management or a closely related field of study from an ABET-accredited institution.
- 0-2 years of progressively responsible professional experience in relevant fields
- Currently in progress towards obtaining Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Geologist-in-Training (GIT) certification.
- Required to travel regularly to local and regional project sites (typically within South Carolina and surrounding states), potentially including overnight stays and perform extensive fieldwork under varying environmental conditions, including adverse weather, uneven terrain, and potentially hazardous environments, while adhering strictly to health and safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities

Assist the project manager with;
- Overseeing comprehensive inspection, testing, and compliance programs on complex and active construction projects.
- Ensuring that all materials, workmanship, and processes adhere to contract documents, specifications, applicable codes, and industry best practices.
- Managing teams of inspectors and technicians while coordinating with contractors, design professionals, owners, and other stakeholders.
- Documenting and certifying the construction of the project was completed in accordance with the requirements of the site's CQA Plan
- Review quality assurance documentation such as soil laboratory and field test results, contractor submittal data, daily field reports developed by technicians in the field, and construction progression.
- Perform site investigations, field inspections, and data collection to support project objectives.

- Technical Expertise: Develop and apply foundational knowledge in environmental regulations, civil design principles, geotechnical investigations, and construction material testing. Assist in data collection, analysis, and basic report preparation under direct supervision.
- Client Relationship Management: Begin to understand the importance of client satisfaction. Assist in clear and concise communication with clients regarding project updates and data, always under the guidance of senior staff. Learn how to maintain professional demeanor and build rapport.
- Quality Control and Assurance: Adhere strictly to company and project-specific quality control procedures. Assist in reviewing data and reports for accuracy and completeness, learning the principles of quality assurance in a consulting environment.
- Project Planning and Scheduling: Contribute to the development of project work plans and schedules by assisting with task breakdown and resource allocation. Learn to track personal progress against project timelines and communicate potential delays to project managers.
- Risk Management and Compliance: Develop an understanding of project-specific risks and assist in identifying potential hazards. Learn to follow all safety protocols and regulatory compliance requirements on project sites and in the office.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work effectively as a supportive team member, collaborating with engineers, scientists, geologists, and technicians from various disciplines. Learn to contribute to a positive and productive team environment.
- Contracts and Vendor Management: Gain exposure to project contracts and assist with the initial stages of vendor coordination under senior guidance. Understand the importance of adherence to contractual obligations.
- Business Development: Support business development efforts by assisting with proposal preparation, data compilation for marketing materials, and understanding the firm's service offerings. Learn to recognize potential opportunities for new work.
- Performance Analytics: Learn to track and report on individual project progress and time utilization. Begin to understand key performance indicators relevant to project efficiency and profitability.
