GPLA, part of the DPR Family of Companies, is a leading firm in the field of structural engineering, dedicated to delivering innovative and efficient solutions for a wide range of construction projects. We are seeking a talented Structural Project Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role is based in Abilene, TX and reports to the Austin office. The successful candidate will be required to work onsite daily in Abilene.
As a Structural Project Engineer, the individual will build upon their experience as a Structural Design Engineer. They will provide support to the Project Manager in overseeing and managing projects from conceptual design through construction completion. This role involves assisting in coordinating tasks, supporting the decision-making processes, scheduling of resources, and overseeing specific design and production aspects of the project.
While the Structural Project Engineer has a lower level of responsibility compared to the Project Manager, they play a crucial role in delivering a project within budget and on time. Responsibilities will include but may not be limited to the following:
Supervisory Responsibilities
Mentor and manage Structural Designers I, Structural Designers II, and Structural Design Engineers.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in the management and production of drawings, specifications, and calculations during a project’s design phase life cycle from conceptual design to completion of construction documents under reduced supervision and coordination with the Project Manager.
Assist in review of deliverables to ensure the scope and quality standards are met throughout project's life cycle.
Assist in the management and completion of various construction administration tasks, such as, reviewing shop drawings and submittals, responding to RFIs, and making site visits, under reduced supervision and coordination with the Project Manager.
Assist in the development of structural designs and analytical models for various building types and materials.
Review and revise designs based on feedback from Senior Designers and Project Stakeholders.
Perform calculations and analyses to ensure structural integrity and compliance with building codes and regulations. Basic knowledge of all relevant codes.
Utilize CAD software, including Tekla Structures, and other tools to create 2D drawings and 3D models.
Collaborate with and help manage team members, including engineers, modelers and detailers, to meet project deadlines and deliver high-quality design solutions within budget.
Collaborate with external stakeholders such as architects, contractors, and MEP designers.
Participate in and help manage project design meetings to achieve project objectives. Some responsibilities may include setting agendas, taking notes, and providing meeting minutes.
Stay updated with industry trends, code updates, and advancements in structural design techniques and technologies by actively participating in professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge in structural engineering and project management. Identify opportunities for process improvement, cost optimization, and efficiency enhancement, and help implement initiatives to drive continuous improvement within the company.

Assist Project Manager to monitor project costs, track expenses and manage the project budget. Assist Project Manager to identify and pursue change orders as appropriate due to the modifications to the project's scope, budget or schedule.

Required Skills and Abilities
In-depth knowledge of structural engineering principles, codes, and standards. Familiarity with structural design and analysis, materials, and construction techniques for making informed decisions and ensuring compliance with regulations.
The ability to identify and analyze problems, propose solutions, and make informed decisions, which includes critical thinking skills and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise during the construction process.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration and communication internally within the project team.

Education and Experience
Minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a Structural focus. Master’s degree in Structural Engineering preferred.
Have Professional Engineer (PE) license. Setup and maintain an NCEES record for licensure.
Six years of experience working in the building structural engineering field.
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit or stand at a desk and work from a computer for prolonged periods of time.
Ability to travel to perform site visits at various project locations around the country.
Ability to lift a minimum of 15 pounds if needed.
