Job Summary
The Survey Chief will lead field survey teams on the I-95 MM 0-8 Project. This position plays a key role in supporting a variety of civil engineering and construction initiatives, including roadway, bridge, utility, and site development work. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in land surveying, a hands-on leadership style, and the technical acumen to ensure precision and compliance across all field operations.
Responsibilities

Demonstrate strong management and organizational skills while leading a survey field crew on active infrastructure projects.

Perform topographic, boundary, construction layout, and as-built surveys using advanced equipment, including GPS, robotic total stations, and drones.

Interpret project plans, drawings, and specifications to guide field survey activities.

Ensure that all survey work meets project timelines, quality standards, and safety protocols.

Maintain accurate and complete field notes, sketches, and daily reports.

Coordinate effectively with engineers, contractors, and clients to ensure project alignment.

Train and mentor junior survey staff on proper methods and equipment usage.

Oversee the maintenance and calibration of all survey equipment.

Provide regular progress updates and flag any issues to the Survey Manager.

Be able to travel out of town as needed.

Be able to work at night as needed
Qualifications
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
- Fleet drivers must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
- Must complete a pre-employment screening; ICE is a drug-free workplace.
Education & Experience Requirements.
- Minimum 4 years of land surveying experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory/leadership role as a Survey or Party Chief.
- Experience working on DOT or transportation infrastructure projects, particularly highway widening.
- Prior experience on SCDOT or GDOT roadway or bridge projects is desired.
- Familiarity with both Georgia and South Carolina survey standards and procedures.
- Solid understanding of boundary, topographic, and construction surveys.
- Strong working knowledge of local, state, and federal surveying regulations.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and blueprints.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
The role involves moderate physical activity such as walking, standing, bending, and climbing stairs or ladders. Employees may occasionally lift objects weighing up to 80 pounds. It is essential for employees to navigate construction sites skillfully and conduct thorough inspections of materials and structures.
Employees must have the ability to visually discern and differentiate details and colors of objects, and proficiency in recognizing sound, tone, and pitch. Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary. The role demands adaptability to interruptions and changes in workflow, as well as the capacity to sit for extended periods. Employees must be capable of working in varied environmental conditions, including hot, cold, and noisy settings, and be able to stand and walk during site visits. Additionally, working on construction projects may involve night work and weekend work depending on the project scope and may include working in conditions with active traffic.
