Position Overview


The Underground Construction Crew Lead is responsible for leading and overseeing underground construction crews performing directional drilling, trenching, conduit placement, and fiber installation.


This role ensures projects are completed safely, on time, and in compliance with customer specifications and regulatory requirements. The Crew Lead is the on-site leader responsible for production, quality control, safety enforcement, and team accountability.


The ideal candidate has strong underground telecom experience and proven leadership ability.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead daily underground construction operations including HDD, trenching, and conduit placement
  • Assign tasks and manage crew productivity
  • Interpret construction prints, bore profiles, and job specifications
  • Ensure all required locates (811) are completed and verified
  • Oversee potholing/daylighting procedures before drilling
  • Maintain required utility clearances
  • Conduct daily job briefings and safety tailboards
  • Perform quality control inspections on completed work
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Market Managers, and Inspectors
  • Complete daily production reporting and documentation
  • Enforce DCOMM and OSHA safety standards

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of underground telecom construction experience
  • 1+ year in a leadership or foreman role preferred
  • Experience with directional drilling operations
  • Strong understanding of 811 locate process and underground utility standards
  • Ability to read and interpret bore plans and construction prints
  • Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred)
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Experience leading fiber deployment crews
  • Experience managing subcontractors
  • Strong production and schedule management skills
  • Experience training newer operators or laborers
