What Is a Moffett Driver?

A Moffett truck-mounted forklift driver operates a truck-typically a flatbed or straight truck-equipped with a Moffett forklift (also known as a "piggyback forklift"). These forklifts are attached to the rear of the vehicle, enabling the driver to self-load and unload materials at job sites without other equipment.

Key Responsibilities

• Safely operate a flatbed or straight truck under a valid CDL (Class A or B), including compliance with DOT and safety regulations.
• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and log any discrepancies.
• Load, secure, transport, and unload construction materials (like lumber, brick, or heavy equipment), often directly using the mounted forklift.
• Operate the Moffett forklift efficiently and safely on-site. You may assist with the placement of materials and secure loads for transport.
• Engage in customer or site-point-of-contact interaction confirming delivery details, obtaining signatures, and ensuring satisfaction.
• Other assignments to include warehouse duties during slow delivery times.

Qualifications & Skills

• Valid CDL license
• Experience or certification in forklift operation, especially for Class VII rough terrain/piggyback units (Moffett forklifts).
• Familiarity with flatbed cargo securement, including straps, padding, and bracing to prevent shifting.
• Strong spatial awareness, mechanical aptitude, and safe operating practices.
• Good communication and customer service skills, especially since deliveries are often onsite and interactive.
• Physical ability to lift up to ~100 lb and work in varied weather conditions.

Typical Work Conditions & Schedule

• Often local delivery routes-drivers stay local or regional and are home daily.
• Compensation commonly ranges from $28.00- $32.00, depending on skills and experience.
