Position Summary
McAlvain Construction is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Civil Superintendent to join our dynamic team. The Civil Superintendent will be responsible for the overall field supervision and successful execution of complex civil construction projects, ensuring they are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. This role requires a strong leader with exceptional technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to fostering a positive and productive work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Leadership & Management:
- Direct and oversee all on-site civil construction activities, including earthwork, underground utilities, site grading, paving, and related civil infrastructure.
- Develop, maintain, and manage detailed project schedules, ensuring critical path activities are met and anticipating potential delays.
- Coordinate and supervise civil site personnel on assigned jobs, including subcontractors, and vendors to ensure efficient workflow and adherence to project plans and specifications.
- Proactively identify and resolve potential issues, conflicts, and challenges on site, collaborating with the Sr. Civil Superintendent, Project Manager, engineers, and other stakeholders.
- Take a lead role in developing and implementing project procedures, standards, and work plans.
- Maintain familiarity with owner contract terms and potential risks.
- Ensure efficient, timely, and high-quality project close-out procedures.
- Safety & Quality Assurance:
- Cultivate a proactive safety culture that prioritizes "safety first" thinking and performance.
- Administer and enforce McAlvain's comprehensive safety program, ensuring compliance with corporate safety plans, OSHA regulations, and project-specific safety measures.
- Conduct regular safety meetings, trainings, and audits, including site visits and documentation review (e.g., Job Hazard Analysis, Pre-Task Plans).
- Implement and monitor quality control procedures to ensure all work conforms to design, specifications, and company standards.
- Communication & Collaboration:
- Regularly meet with and update Civil Operations Manager and Sr. Civil Superintendent
- Maintain clear, consistent, and effective communication with project managers, field and office staff, subcontractors, clients, and design professionals.
- Conduct regular site meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and upcoming tasks.
- Document project progress daily through detailed logs, photographic documentation, and consistent construction reporting.
- Foster strong relationships with subcontractors, vendors, and local authorities
- Financial & Resource Management:
- Monitor project budget and costs, making responsible fiscal decisions in conjunction with the Project Manager.
- Manage equipment and material logistics, ensuring timely delivery and optimal utilization.
- Ensure accurate daily documentation of work orders/tickets and understand subcontractor scopes of work to avoid unnecessary change orders.
- Track productivity to ensure daily goals are met or exceeded.
- Mentorship & Development:
- Mentor and provide technical assistance to foremen, journeymen, and laborers.
- Identify opportunities for personal development and growth for individual reports.
- Support field superintendents and foremen in their positions by exhibiting strong leadership in recruiting, training, and motivating team members.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive experience as a Superintendent in civil construction, with a strong background in heavy equipment, earthwork, mass excavation, trenching, wet utilities, traffic control, and paving.
- Proven track record of successfully managing and delivering civil projects on time and within budget.
- Demonstrated expertise in reading and interpreting blueprints, specifications, and construction documents.
- Strong knowledge of construction means and methods, sequencing, and best practices.
- Comprehensive understanding of OSHA regulations and a proven commitment to job site safety.
- Excellent leadership, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to analyze problems, make sound decisions, and effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with construction management software (e.g., Procore, Viewpoint Vista), Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook), and scheduling software is a plus.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites as required.
- OSHA 30 certification preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is a plus, but not required with extensive relevant experience.
