The Construction Inspector ensures that the City's underground utility and pavement construction projects comply with established policies and ordinances. Responsibilities include scheduling and conducting site inspections, reviewing construction plans for compliance, and issuing notices or citations when necessary. The role also involves performing follow-up inspections, testing pipeline, and pavement construction, verifying elevations and construction locations, and completing final site inspections. Additional duties include maintaining construction files, generating reports, providing administrative support, and offering information to contractors and citizens. The position also requires coordination with other City employees and departments. This role does not involve supervisory responsibilities.


**There is one position that can be filled as either a Construction Inspector or Senior Construction Inspector**

Essential Functions

The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may be required to perform additional position-specific duties.
  • Ensures compliance with underground utility installations by scheduling inspections with contractors, testing pipe construction against City policies and ordinances, interacting with contractors on compliance issues, issuing stop work orders, reporting findings and notices issued, addressing issues or concerns raised by citizens and contractors, maintaining files and completing follow-up inspections as needed.
     
  • Ensures compliance with City pavement construction projects by reviewing City's ordinances and standards for construction, reviewing construction plans, observing the construction of pavement projects, determining compliance with City specifications and ordinances, interacting with contractors, testing pavement and other construction materials, checking locations and elevations, issuing notices when appropriate, interacting with contractors and citizens, ensuring traffic control policies are followed, documenting findings of testing procedures, maintaining files and completing follow-up inspections as needed.
     
  • Review construction plans for compliance with City ordinances by understanding and interpreting City's construction policies and ordinances, applying standards to construction plans, determining if errors exist in plans, addressing errors with contractors and citizens, meeting with contractors and citizens, providing information and interpretation of construction ordinances, documenting review process as appropriate and maintaining files.
     
  • Conducts final inspections by completing walk-through procedures, observing completed construction, testing construction for flaws, opening and closing valves, documenting when appropriate, and reinspecting premises after the maintenance period.
     
  • Provides administrative support by filing lab reports, engineering revision letters, typing letters to contractors and generating reports to City Hall as necessary.
  • Provides field location and marking of public water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer facilities per GIS, as-built, and other available reference information as required.

Job Requirements

Education & Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent plus two (2) years of relevant work experience
Special Requirements
  • Must possess a valid Texas Class C Driver’s License.
Physical Demands / Work Environment
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Comfortable working with hazardous materials and in high-traffic areas.
  • Physical strength to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50-100 lbs occasionally.
