POSITION SUMMARY:

Directs and participates in a variety of work involved in the maintenance and repairs of various components in the city distribution system.

SCHEDULE: M-Th 6:00am-4:00 pm Summer, M-F 7:00am-3:00pm Winter, Schedule may vary based on departmental need.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Stand-by required as directed by manager.

· Inspects leaks to survey the severity, white lines and calls in locates, put together full job requirement package to Manager including maps, valve cards and any other items required for the repair.

· Evaluate each worksite for potential public and personnel health and safety risks and ensure the proper procedures and equipment are utilized.

· Oversees backfilling, repairing of piping, streets cuts, concrete street and curb replacements.

· Directs, supervises, trains, and assists crews.

· Accurately documents inventory used at each location.

· Ensures C&M Crew maintains inventory in a neat and organized manner.

· Works with the Manager to direct staff for end-of-day activities.

· Maintains records and related paperwork for crew activities.

· Maintains and repairs water service lines and water mains.

· Installs and repairs fire hydrants.

· Installs and repairs water valves and associated structures.

· Provides records for annual and other reports; provides inventory control records.

NON-ESSENTIAL/MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

· Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as apparent or as assigned.

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:

· High school diploma or equivalent

· Three years’ experience repairing water infrastructure.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

· Knowledge of methods of water system construction and maintenance.

· Must be able to evaluate the job site and identify potential public and personnel safety risks and understand the policies and procedures to implement. Must direct the setup and use of all required safety equipment and use of PPE.

· Must have excavation and trench training.

· Ensure proper utility locations have been done.

· Knowledge of outdoor work crew procedures.

· Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.

· Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.

· Ability to maintain accurate records.

· Ability to deal effectively with the public.

· Ability to perform strenuous work and lift one hundred pounds.

· PC knowledge required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, REGISTRATION:

· CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with Tanker Endorsement mandatory.

· IDEM DSL Certification preferred.

EQUIPMENT:

Backhoe, hydro excavator, dump trucks, compressors, tripod, gas detector, ventilator, personal computer and a variety of safety and heavy equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work performed in the field. Exposure to noise, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work and or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain. The work environment is both formal and informal, team oriented, having variable tasks, pace, and pressure.
