Position Overview

Water demands are increasing in the Tampa Bay Area largely due to population growth, and water demand management is a way to help reduce those demands by increasing water use efficiency through short- and long-term programs. Tampa Bay Water is responsible for planning and coordinating one such program, Tampa Bay Water Wise (www.tampabaywaterwise.org), a regional water conservation rebate program. The program is a partnership between Tampa Bay Water, its six member governments, and the Southwest Florida Water Management District. 

The Demand Management co-op student will work under the direct supervision of the Systems Decision Support staff.  The co-op student will have the opportunity to perform a variety of entry level, professional, research and demand management-related tasks that will inform the development and implementation of this regional water conservation program and support analytics used to cost-effectively target potential regional water savings. Research and benchmark on how both active and passive efficiencies could be incorporated into potable demand forecast. There is a wide range of tasks that are included in this position, and the selected student will have the ability to leverage his/her specific skills, learn new skills, and pursue topics that align with their interests. 

The Demand Management co-op position is an opportunity for a student to learn about water utility operations through the lens of its demand side analyses and management programs. It is a temporary, part-time, office position located in Clearwater, Florida. The student will work between 10-20 hours per week. 

Essential Functions

  • Conduct desktop analysis on water use pattern changes prior, during and after outdoor water uses restrictions are implemented and lifted (demand hardening).
  • Assists with analyzing water-related data and analyzes trends around the region.
  • Assists in researching water conservation and sustainability programs from around the state and country.
  • Develops clearly and concisely written whitepaper(s) on various topics.
  • Assists with efforts related to promoting and advancing the Tampa Bay Water Wise program, such as researching outreach events, networks/organizations, and assembling/mailing outreach materials.
  • Assists with reviewing data for quality control.
  • Assists with identifying and securing speakers for monthly meeting series.
  • Attends meetings and events, virtually or in-person.
  • Observes Safety Policies and Procedures in accordance with the Agency’s Safety Program.
  • Performs other related work as directed.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills. 
  • Strong quantitative skills.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
  • Organized, analytical and thorough.
  • Highly motivated.

 

Preferred Training and Experience:

  • Environmental studies
  • Business/communications 
  • Social sciences 
  • Political science

 

EDUCATION REQUIRED: 

  • Actively enrolled and pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

 

 

MINIMUM STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

Physical Abilities:  Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.

 

Sensory Abilities:  Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability.

 

Environmental Requirements: Office environment will be provided. Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
