Director, EHS Construction

Fleet Data Centers
Full-time
On-site
Sparks, Nevada, United States
$200,000 - $225,000 USD yearly

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced EHS Construction Director to lead the EHS Construction Managers and oversee the strategic direction and execution of EHS programs across all Fleet Data construction sites. This is a critical leadership role responsible for ensuring alignment with the global EHS strategy set by the VP, EHS, championing a world-class on-site safety culture, and driving rigorous implementation and verification of EHS programs, especially for Hazardous Activities. The Director will report to the Vice President, EHS and manage the EHS Construction Managers.

This will be a highly visible leader who sets the strategic EHS standard for construction, leads a team of EHS Construction Managers, influences General Contractors at the executive and operational level, and dedicates time to overseeing construction operations and hazardous activities to ensure exceptional EHS performance.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic EHS Leadership & Program Governance

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the team of EHS Construction Managers, fostering a culture of safety, transparency, and accountability across all Fleet construction projects.
  • Oversee the implementation of the global EHS strategy and the Fleet General Contractor EHS Policy and Procedures, including Hazardous Activity Management and General Management Standards, across all construction sites.
  • Collaborate with the VP EHS to establish, implement, and continuously improve comprehensive health, safety, and environmental programs and policies for the development organization.
  • Establish and manage a robust Owner EHS audit and inspection program for all construction sites to identify deficiencies and drive continuous improvement.

2. EHS Construction Oversight & Contractor Management

  • Provide executive oversight and strategic direction for the daily EHS performance standards of the General Contractor and all subcontractors. Through active engagement and leadership, this role sets a strong tone for exceptional EHS performance across the entire site and pro-actively leads, engages, and coaches contractors to ensure effective EHS process compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Drive Meticulous Operational Oversight of Contractor Hazardous Activity Compliance by directing EHS Managers to verify the rigorous execution of safety protocols. This includes ensuring compliance with Risk Planning (including attending HRA forecasting and planning meetings, three levels of risk assessments, and schedule integration) and the strict adherence to the Management of Change (MOC) process for EHS-relevant project changes.
  • Verify the Integrity of Field Execution and Personnel Management through EHS Manager involvement in GC planning, look-aheads, daily coordination meetings, pre-task planning, and daily ‘toolbox’ talks. Ensure all sites maintain robust compliance with permit procedures, specific Hazardous Activity Plans, worker orientation, training, and the sharing and implementation of Lessons Learned.
  • Establish and implement a monthly GC EHS performance balanced scorecard derived from metrics obtained from the GC but also observations from inspections and audits conducted by the Owner.
  • Lead EHS Integration and Program Assurance: Participate in and lead the Safety in Design committee to ensure the inherently safe design of construction sites. Verify the utilization of Building Information Modeling (BIM) / Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) for Hazardous Activity Management.
  • Ensure full EHS Program Assurance and Reporting for Senior Leadership: This includes developing and tracking key EHS performance indicators (KPIs), meticulously overseeing and auditing EHS documentation, and preparing regular reports for senior leadership on performance, trends, and initiatives. This process ensures full compliance with all federal, state, local, and international EHS regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, specific country regulations) and overall EHS performance metrics. Ensure disciplined compliance tracking of any non-conformities, deficiencies, or safety observations made by both the Owner and contractors.
  • Direct Environmental Stewardship and Emergency Preparedness: Ensure implementation of environmental management best practices, including waste management, pollution prevention, and sustainable construction initiatives. Support the development, implementation, and periodic drill/exercising of emergency response plans, including necessary training.

3. EHS Program Leadership and Culture

  • Act as the primary EHS Owner representative in all Contractor / Owner meetings.
  • Serve as the on-site champion of Fleet Data Centers' EHS culture and policies, acting with professionalism and integrity and holding the General Contractor and all subcontractors to the highest standards.
  • Promote a strong on-site safety culture through felt and visible leadership, setting an example for all personnel and creating relationships of trust with the General Contractor EHS, Construction, and other stakeholders.
  • Be a visible leader who can build trust, foster a "non-blame" culture, and proactively coach contractors. You will need to influence behavior and drive continuous improvement without direct authority over all on-site personnel.
  • Proactively promote the implementation of hazardous observations (including good catches) for contractors reporting programs, fostering a non-blame culture.
  • Direct and coach the learning and post-mortem process for incidents, ensuring findings of fact, root cause determination, conclusions, and recommendations are thoroughly established and implemented. Lead investigations where determined necessary.
  • Partner closely with the construction project director, managers, engineering teams, procurement, legal, and other internal departments to integrate EHS considerations into all phases of the construction lifecycle.
  • Utilize EHS software to oversee compliance tracking related to contractor EHS oversight functions, ensuring accountability, timely interventions, effective corrective and preventative plans, and proper risk management. Assist with contractor EHS vetting and assurance.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience working as an EHS leader in the Data Center or highly- regulated industrial construction industry
  • 7+ years of experience overseeing and implementing EHS performance standards for general contractors and subcontractors and managing hazardous activities.
  • 7+ years of experience leading and conducting comprehensive investigations, developing high-quality incident reports, and ensuring sustainable implementation of lessons learned.
  • 7+ years of experience managing EHS software including contractor vetting, compliance, and metrics reporting.
  • 3+ years in a management or leadership role overseeing other EHS professionals

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Relevant safety certifications such as CSP, CHST, OSHA 30.
  • Deep knowledge of global EHS regulations (OSHA, EPA, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 standards).
  • Familiarity with Safety in Design principles and the use of BIM/VDC for EHS management.
  • Experience in a global EHS leadership role.

This role will include up to 25% domestic travel to Fleet offices and vendors.
