Job Summary:

The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates and bid proposals for civil construction projects including utilities, earthwork, concrete, grading, and site development. The Estimator reviews project plans, specifications, and related documents to determine labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor costs. This position works closely with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, and vendors to ensure competitive and profitable project bids.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Where applicable, may assist in directing or coordinating work activities related to the estimating process, including collaboration with project teams and subcontractors.

What you'll Do:

  • Reviews project plans, specifications, and bid documents to understand project scope and requirements.
  • Performs quantity takeoffs for materials, labor, and equipment required for civil construction projects.
  • Solicits and evaluates subcontractor and supplier bids and proposals.
  • Prepares detailed cost estimates including labor, equipment, materials, subcontractor costs, and overhead.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits to evaluate project conditions.
  • Identifies potential project risks and develops strategies to address cost impacts.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and field personnel to confirm construction methods and production rates.
  • Prepare bid packages, cost summaries, and proposal documents.
  • Maintains historical cost data and estimating databases.
  • Assists with project handoff to project management teams following contract award.
  • Reviews project documents to ensure compliance with project requirements and company standards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

What you'll need to succeed:

  • Thorough understanding of civil construction methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Strong ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Proficient in estimating software, spreadsheets, and digital takeoff tools.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple estimates simultaneously.
  • Extremely detail-oriented and accurate.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in civil construction estimating or related construction experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to travel to various project sites as needed 10% of the time.
  • Must be able to access and navigate job sites and construction areas.
