ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineer to join our team supporting the DOE's Y-12 National Security Complex! This position is full-time and will be based out of Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Responsibilities

  • Apply technical expertise and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the Electrical Engineering field with Instrumentation & Controls focus for equipment process control and monitoring.

  • Responsible for developing high quality detailed design packages, providing engineering procurement and field technical support to implement those designs, and providing expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of plant systems.

  • Prepare conceptual engineering deliverables such as:

    • cost-estimating bills of material and labor-hour estimates,

    • statements of work,

    • design criteria,

    • title II design engineering deliverables,

    • calculations and analyses,

    • construction specifications & drawings, and

    • equipment specifications.

  • Routinely perform walkdowns in the existing plant facilities in order to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel.

  • Effectively and cooperatively work as a team member of an integrated project team.

  • Develop control cabinet assembly drawings, system diagrams, and control logic for both batch and continuous processes using conventional analog instrumentation, distributed digital control systems, and programmable logic controller/human-machine interfaces (PLCs/HMIs).

  • Prepare conduit/cable schedules, conduit/equipment plans, one-line diagrams, wiring/connection/schematic diagrams, instrument loop diagrams, various sections/elevations/details, calculations, datasheets, and construction specifications.

  • Perform field troubleshooting of existing systems to inform design for corrective actions. 

  • Develop process control system narratives, aid in the development of process software requirements, and provide input to Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).

Requirements

  • Education & Years of Experience – Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET Accredited University and 10+ years of relevant experience (including I&C experience).

  • Citizenship – To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.

  • Clearance – To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed.

  • Must have demonstrated experience utilizing the National Electrical Code, UL508A, and relevant ISA standards to design instrumentation and controls systems.

Desired Skills

  • Experience utilizing Rockwell Automation industrial automation software (RSLogix, FactoryTalk View, etc.).

  • A Professional Engineering (PE) License.

The NNSA's Y-12 National Security Complex, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is the nation’s only source of enriched uranium nuclear weapon components and provides enriched uranium for the U.S. Navy as well as excels in materials science, precision manufacturing, and stores enriched uranium. Y-12 supports efforts to reduce nuclear proliferation risk and performs work for other government agencies (energy.gov).
