Summary

The Lead Exterior Carpenter is a working field leader responsible for executing and overseeing exterior construction projects, with a primary focus on roofing, siding, and related exterior systems. This role leads a small crew, coordinates closely with the Project Manager, maintains quality and safety standards, and ensures projects stay on schedule and on budget.


This position is also responsible for driving crew members to and from job sites, including Amish carpenters who do not drive. Reliability, professionalism, and leadership are critical, as the crew depends on this individual daily. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires comfort working on roofs, ladders, scaffolding, and at heights in varying weather conditions.


Key Responsibilities

Field Leadership & Production

  • Lead and actively work alongside the crew on roofing, siding, and exterior carpentry tasks.
  • Assign daily tasks to Carpenter I and Carpenter II team members and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to specification.
  • Perform and oversee installation of roofing systems, siding, trim, and exterior components according to manufacturer requirements, contract documents, and company standards.
  • Review plans, specifications, and scopes of work to fully understand project requirements before and during construction.
  • Identify discrepancies between drawings and existing site conditions and communicate issues promptly to the Project Manager.
  • Train and mentor carpenters and apprentices to improve skills, productivity, and workmanship.

Roofing & Work-at-Heights Requirements

  • Must be willing and able to work on roofs, ladders, scaffolding, and elevated platforms.
  • Comfortable working at heights for extended periods.
  • Follow all fall-protection, ladder, and jobsite safety protocols at all times.

Project Coordination

  • Collaborate with the Project Manager to keep projects running on schedule and within budget.
  • Assist with basic project management tasks as needed, including planning work sequences and solving field issues.
  • Maintain daily jobsite logs for all sites visited.
  • Keep the jobsite orderly and clean, meeting company cleanliness and safety standards.

Driving & Transportation

  • Reliably transport crew members to and from job sites each workday.
  • Be punctual and dependable, as crew members rely on the driver for daily transportation.
  • Assist with material pickups and store runs (Home Depot, supply houses, etc.).
  • Maintain company vehicle cleanliness and report maintenance needs promptly.

Administrative & Reporting Duties

  • Log personal and crew hours daily 
  • Track time-and-material work accurately when applicable.
  • Maintain accurate records to support job costing and scheduling.

Safety & Professionalism

  • Work in full compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Promote a positive, respectful, and team-oriented jobsite culture.
  • Communicate clearly, professionally, and non-confrontationally with team members, trade partners, and homeowners.
  • Escalate conflicts or issues to the Production Lead when appropriate.
  • Remain open to feedback, continuous learning, and skill development.
Requirements

  

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • 7+ years of experience in residential remodeling or exterior construction.
  • Strong background in roofing, siding, and exterior carpentry.
  • Proven ability to lead a crew and produce high-quality work.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and contracts.
  • Excellent organization, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong customer service and communication abilities.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated.
  • Physically capable of lifting at least 30 lbs, working on feet for extended periods, and performing manual labor outdoors.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record preferred.
  • Commitment to following all safety procedures.
