DescriptionThis position is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and secure manner in order to minimize the risk of injury and property damage. Equipment utilized in this position includes, but is not limited to, trucks, front-end loaders, back hoes, blades, graders, compactors, and other equipment.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Ability to operate various pieces of heavy equipment, including loaders, excavators, dozers, graders, backhoes, etc.
- Operate all heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner according to all applicable policies and procedures.
- Responsible for excavating trenches, digging holes, leveling dirt, and leveling asphalt.
- Reads and interprets grade and slope stakes and simple plans.
- Ensure heavy equipment is safely and securely stored.
- Perform daily safety and maintenance checks.
- May perform general labor duties as needed.
- Transport vehicle equipped with tools and materials to job sites.
- Adheres to procedures, regulations, and guidelines while minimizing errors and safety risks.
- Follow instructions and comprehend construction needs.
- Regular attendance is required according to company policy to ensure the crew can operate at the normal efficiency level.
- Performs other duties of a similar or related nature as assigned.
QualificationsRequired Skills/Abilities:
- Able to follow established safety rules applicable to heavy equipment operators, to maintain a safe environment, and to adapt and respond to potentially hazardous conditions and use the appropriate PPE.
- Able to follow directions, instructions, structured processes, and procedures.
- Able to work in all weather conditions (extreme heat/cold, wind, rain).
- Knowledge of vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance practices, repairs, and techniques.
- Knowledge of equipment to ensure proper working conditions by checking gauges, dials, and other indicators.
- Able to work a flexible schedule with last-minute schedule changes, location, time of shift change (day & night), and overtime work as needed.
- Able to communicate effectively in English/Spanish (preferred).
Education and Experience:
- High School or equivalent (preferred).
- Minimum two (2) years’ experience in the construction industry.
- One (1) year of work experience in roads and ground maintenance, or demonstrated ability to properly use equipment, and knowledge of road maintenance standards.
- A CDL or other special classification of operator’s license may be required.
- Valid Driver’s License with a clear MVR may be required.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent walking on uneven surfaces, including ground in varying weather conditions.
- Frequently ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like.
- Constantly reaching, pushing, and pulling gears to operate the levers and the steering wheel.
- Regularly sit, stand, or walk short distances for up to the entire duration of a shift/workday.
- May stoop, kneel, or bend on an occasional basis.
- May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist on a frequent basis.
- Regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
- Exposure to the outdoor environment with machinery/equipment in the surrounding area.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Excellent vision or the use of prescribed lenses.
- Able to work in all weather conditions (extreme heat/cold, wind, rain).
- Able to safely operate a personal and/or company motor vehicle.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment is required, including but not limited to steel-toe shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, vest, etc.
