Description

The Senior Project Accountant is a critical role responsible for the comprehensive financial accounting of construction projects, supporting the Controller, the accounting department, and operations teams. This position requires a strategic mindset to oversee project financials, ensure compliance with accounting standards, and deliver detailed financial insights to support decision-making.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Ensure timely and accurate posting of project transactions, including costs, billings, change orders, budget adjustments, and transfers.
  • Monitor and report on project progression during monthly Work In Progress (WIP) review meetings, providing actionable insights to management.
  • Collaborate with construction project managers to analyze project expenses and budget-to-actual reports, proactively identifying potential cost overruns and financial risks.
  • Oversee project cash flow management and aged receivables, implementing strategies to optimize financial performance.
  • Coordinate and facilitate project closeouts in collaboration with project managers, ensuring compliance with contract terms.
  • Lead the month-end close process, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of financial reports for stakeholders, delivering key insights and recommendations.
  • Manage and support special projects involving financial analysis and reporting as necessary.
  • Mentor and train junior accounting staff, enhancing team capabilities and performance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, adapting to the organization's evolving needs.


Qualifications

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • High proficiency in using a construction ERP system, with CMiC experience being a significant advantage.
  • In-depth knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the construction industry accounting standards.
  • Advanced analytical and organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail, capable of managing complex financial data.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including colleagues, leadership, and external partners.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, adept at analyzing issues and proposing innovative solutions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive financial information securely.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, with skills in creating pivot tables, utilizing lookups, and generating complex financial reports.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or relevant certification preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in commercial construction and/or cost accounting, with a focus on large-scale projects.
  • Extensive understanding of the project life cycle, construction costing and billing methods, WIP schedules, earned revenue, retainage, change orders, certified payrolls, project budgets, contract compliance, and construction reporting metrics.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • May stoop, kneel, or bend on an occasional basis.
  • May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist on an occasional basis.
