Position Summary

The Senior Staff Accountant is a key member of the accounting team responsible for managing and supporting core financial processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, and maintaining compliance with internal controls and regulatory standards. This role involves advanced accounting duties including general ledger oversight, account reconciliations, financial statement preparation, and month-end and year-end closing activities.

The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in accounting principles, experience with ERP systems, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a fast-paced environment. The Senior Staff Accountant will also assist in audit preparations, support budgeting and forecasting processes, and provide guidance to fellow accounting staff as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates effective communication and problem-solving skills.

  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts in accordance with GAAP and company policies.

  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing process.

  • Prepare and analyze monthly WIP schedules.

  • Reconcile WIP with the general ledger and provide variance explanations.

  • Support management in forecasting cash flow based on WIP data.

  • Support annual financial audits, including preparation of schedules and responding to auditor inquiries.

  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, company policies, and external regulations.

  • Recommend and help implement improvements to accounting processes and internal controls.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective processes, completion of projects and smooth operation of department.

  • Advanced accounting software aptitude and computer knowledge and efficiency, including Microsoft excel.
  • Firm understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Knowledge of WIP accounting, contract costing, and general ledger functions.
  • Strong ability to analyze financial data and provide actionable insights for decision-making.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for clear and concise reporting.
  • High level of confidentiality, maturity, and discretion.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage complex projects and competing priorities.
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting and reconciliations.
  • Experience with COINS software a plus.
  • Independent but unafraid to seek advice and assistance when necessary.
  • Thinks critically and solves problems.
  • Ability to maintain regular attendance and be on time, work outside normal business hours as needed.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required.)
  • CPA or progress toward CPA certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, with 2-3 years in audit experience. Construction accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience with ERPs preferably construction-specific accounting software (e.g., COINS, Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, Procore, or similar ERP systems.)
