The Role
The Superintendent oversees all field operations on a project to ensure that self-performed and subcontracted trade work is compliant with contract documents and the project schedule. Superintendents also implement and enforce safety and quality control policies among Atkinson employees and subcontractors.
Responsibilities
Champion our safety culture by conducting regular safety inspections to assure all working conditions and work habits are compliant with company, contract, and government standards
Supervise the timely and cost-effective installation of the contracted work of either for the total project, or, due to size, scale, and complexity, a particular scope(s), subcontractor(s), or other portion(s) of the project
Provide on-the-job training opportunities for Assistant Superintendents and Project/Office Engineer
Encourage and/or participate in staff training and development
Develop a plan for a sequence of work including: Developing the project schedule and plan and organize project work to assure all work is in place in accordance with contract documents
Have working knowledge of owner contracts, subcontracts, and purchase orders
Know the scheduled delivery dates for all critical path material and equipment.
Know submittal schedule for the project
Update project schedule monthly and in accordance with contract documents
Control field costs for Atkinson and subcontract work
Supervise field workforce to assure all work is put in place in the most cost-efficient manner
Schedule and monitor field productivity
Have good working knowledge of equipment
Implement the company’s safety policies and procedures and corporate QC policies and programs
Assist in resolution of scope conflict
Participate in the project management functions
Assure punch list is completed in a timely manner
Qualifications
• 6+ years of experience with a large-scale heavy civil contractor or equivalent industry experience preferred.
• In-depth knowledge of the construction process, including scheduling, contract administration, equipment, and manpower.
• Experience with a large-scale heavy civil contractor or equivalent industry experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
• Demonstrated ability to lead field operations.

The work environment and requirements described below are representative of those necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this role.
The Physical Side of the Role: This is an active, hands-on role. You can expect to be on your feet frequently, navigating active job sites with uneven terrain, stairs, ladders, and hoists. The work is physically demanding and requires a full range of motion, including bending, kneeling, and reaching. You’ll need to be comfortable frequently lifting and carrying materials up to 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds. This role requires the ability to communicate effectively, as well as visual acuity for reading plans and inspecting work. The role does include desk time in the office that may require prolonged periods of sitting for tasks like computer work, document review, and meetings.
Your Work Environment: You’ll spend a significant amount of your time on active construction sites, which means being adaptable to all kinds of weather and moderate to loud noise levels, and comfortable in elevated or confined work areas with moving mechanical equipment and with the fast-paced nature of a project in progress. You will also spend time in a typical office setting with moderate noise levels.
